What is a crown?

A crown is a dental restoration used when a simple filling won’t suffice. Acting as a kind of ‘crown’ or ‘cap’ for the tooth, a crown is designed to help repair and protect a tooth that has been damaged as a result of decay or injury. They are also often used in conjunction with another treatment, such as a large filling or root canal treatment, in order to ensure the long-term form and functionality of the tooth.

What are crowns made of?

Like many restorations crowns can be made of a variety of materials, but most are made of a precious metal such as gold, porcelain, or Zirconia. At Harley Private Dental we’re able to offer our patients CEREC same day crowns. These crowns are made from highly durable ceramic and can be fitted in just one appointment.

What makes CEREC different?

The difference with a CEREC crown is that you can be assessed and fitted for your crown on the same day. After an initial assessment, we’ll take a scan of the mouth, prepare the tooth, make the crown, and fit it for you, all within a couple of hours.

Traditionally, receiving a crown, inlay or onlay or other restoration requires multiple appointments at the practice, and a wait of up to two weeks while the restoration is made at a dental laboratory. During this time, you would be fitted with a temporary restoration which can often cause discomfort and frustration. The CEREC method means we can have you fitted for your restoration in just one appointment, with no waiting around. This makes for not only a faster experience for the patient, but a more comfortable one too.
